Sclafani to take Hinds Circuit Judge oath April 23

Joseph Anthony Sclafani will be sworn in at 11 a.m. Monday, April 23, as Hinds County Circuit Judge.

The ceremony will be held in the southwest courtroom on the second floor of the Hinds County Courthouse in Jackson. Senior Circuit Judge Tomie Green will pre-side.

Judge E. Grady Jolly, senior status judge of the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Ap-peals, is expected to administer the oath. Sclafani served as a law clerk for Judge Jolly immediately after earning his law degree from Mississippi College School of Law.

Gov. Phil Bryant appointed Sclafani to the Seventh District Circuit Court judgeship previously held by Judge William A. Gowan Jr., who retired March 31. Sclafani’s appointment will be effective April 23 and will expire on Jan. 1, 2019.

Sclafani, of Clinton, has been in private law practice with Brunini, Grantham, Grower, and Hewes, PLLC, since 2003. His areas of practice include appellate, com-mercial litigation, product liability and mass torts and premises liability. He practiced law in Palo Alto, Calif., from 2000 to 2003, dealing with securities and patent litigation.

Sclafani earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Mississippi College, where he was a re-cipient of the Perry Academic Medal. He is a 1999 graduate of the Mississippi College School of Law, where he finished first in his class.
